$56,330 |
To the
Environmental Industry Associations (EIA) (in conjunction with
the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)) to extend development and
training sessions on reducing ergonomic risks to the solid waste
employee. EIA will develop an internet-based, distance-learning
ergonomics training module for waste industry personnel; continue its
development of Best Management Practices for preventing ergonomic
injuries to solid waste employees; create and maintain a
comprehensive database on ergonomic issues; and offer a fifth
ergonomics training session at WasteExpo in May 2002 in Las Vegas,
Nev. (attendance was open to all public- and private-sector
employees in the solid waste industry). The project is
complete; development of BMPs is ongoing.

| $500,000 |
To Michigan
State University to design and operate a bioreactor landfill cell
and quantify its air and water emissions. The construction of the 1.5-acre
bioreactor cell occurred in summer 2001; installation of monitoring equipment
and filling of the bioreactor was completed in February 2003.
Monitoring is
currently taking place. (An additional $25,000 was awarded by
EREF in December 2004 for a year of additional monitoring.)
