Literature Review and Research Needs for Landfill Bioreactors
SCS Engineers, Reston, Virginia, USA
November 2000

Study Available -- Price: $15  -- Order form.

INTRODUCTION

During 2000 the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) was attempting to locate and secure Federal funding for a field-scale, landfill bioreactor demonstration project to be conducted at a landfill in Michigan.  In advance of committing to such a project, the Foundation sought to better understand what information might be needed from a field-scale operation that would help validate the bioreactor approach to landfilling.  To this end, SCS Engineers was retained by the EREF to conduct a review of past landfill bioreactor studies through a comprehensive search of the technical literature.

The objectives of the literature review are:

  • to identify technical literature sources with an emphasis on research and field-scale bioreactor studies;
  • to limit the literature sources to principally North American, Australian, and New Zealand authors (so as to complement a similar effort being performed by SITA for studies in Europe);
  • to provide an emphasis on recently published references (i.e., last 5 years or so), with limited inclusion of relevant historical studies; and
  • to identify research needs and to provide recommendations specific to the scope of bioreactor field-scale projects.

The general methodology of this project was to seek landfill bioreactor references from industry publications, including conference proceedings, journal articles, and previous literature reviews.  Other references were identified for consideration through direct contacts with individuals working in the bioreactor field.  These references were reviewed and are compiled alphabetically in Section 1 of the Literature Review - Identification of Landfill Bioreactor References.

Secondly, a subset of these references was developed by subject area so as to better identify research needs from certain key published works.  Project summaries were prepared for this subset or target list of references, as presented in Section 2 of the Literature Review - Landfill Bioreactor Project Summaries.

Lastly, based on the literature review performed, a discussion of bioreactor research needs is given in Section 3 of the Literature Review - Key Areas of Needed Research.
