Environmental Research and Education Foundation Extends
Funding for Florida Bioreactor Landfill Research

Alexandria, Va. - During its fall meeting held on August 27 in La Jolla, Tex., the Environmental Research and Education Foundation's (EREF) Board of Directors approved extended funding for one of its solid waste research projects:

$30,000 to the University of Central Florida, Orlando, Fla., to evaluate the fate of nitrogen in bioreactor landfills by conducting laboratory and field studies aimed at determining nitrification and denitrification rates as a function of ammonia and nitrate mass loadings, respectively, under different environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, age of waste since placed, and oxygen levels) to more accurately characterize nitrification and denitrification in landfills and to provide the data necessary to enable field-scale implementation.

In April 2002, EREF provided initial funding of $30,000 for the project.  The funds allowed experimental research to begin on evaluating the optimal environmental conditions and efficiencies of in-situ nitrification/denitrification of leachate at the New River Landfill in Florida.  An aerobic, municipal solid waste bioreactor is being operated and parameters are being measured in the leachate to indicate whether nitrification/denitrification is occurring in-situ.

The Environmental Research and Education Foundation is an independent public charity; its funding base is derived from donations from corporations and individuals who are committed to EREF's mission to develop environmental solutions for the future.
