Environmental Research and Education Foundation Awards Over Washington,
D.C. - During its summer meeting held on August 24 in Alexandria, Virginia, the Environmental
Research and Education Foundation's (EREF) Board of Directors approved funding for three significant research
projects. The projects chosen were:
$185,000
to URS Dames & Moore, London, United Kingdom, to
research the regulatory, economic and technical aspects of
greenhouse gas emission reductions in the waste
industry. Collection of data is scheduled to take
approximately one year, with project completion anticipated
during the summer of 2002.
$38,211
to Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, for
development of an electronic nose technology that will be
applied to landfill odors. The electronic nose will
provide both a "fingerprint" and the concentration
of various landfill odors. Project completion is
anticipated for spring of 2002.
$100,000
to the Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle, Wash., for
improvement of yeast strains to produce ethanol via the
fermentation of waste. Ethanol is an environmentally
friendly, clean burning fuel, which can be blended with
automobile fuels. Researchers will investigate native
and engineered strains to determine which performs best on
waste products. The project should be completed in the
fall of 2002.
Over $1,100,000 has been awarded so far in 2001 for
research and education projects. The mission of the Environmental Research and Education
Foundation is to develop environmental solutions for the
future through research and education. Its endowment
provides the financial base for a sustainable series of
significant projects and scholarships. A list of grants
and scholarships funded to date, EREF's grant and scholarship
guidelines, and fundraising details are available online at www.erefdn.org.

"We are extremely pleased to provide a substantial amount of funding to benefit waste
industry research," says Leonard E. "Butch"
Joyce (Joyce Engineering, Inc., Richmond, Va.), chairman,
project review committee. "The requests for waste
industry research are increasing in both quality and quantity,
making it even more important for all industries and the
general public to support the foundation and the important
work we do," he added.
