October 4, 2002:
Environmental Research and Education Foundation Awarded Washington,
D.C. - On September 24, 2002, the Environmental Research
and Education Foundation (EREF) was awarded its third Susan
Harwood Training Grant from the U.S. Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA). Susan Harwood Training
Grants provide funds to nonprofit organizations to conduct
safety and health training and education in the workplace.
Under the terms of this $56,330 grant, EREF
will conduct the following activities:
Translating EREF's handouts from its
2001-2002 ergonomics training sessions into Spanish.
These handouts will be made available, at no cost, to solid
waste employers and employees in both printed form and in
downloadable format via its website; Developing checklists of ergonomics issues,
in English and Spanish, for solid waste employers and
employees to use as part of their overall safety program and
training; Continue supervision of the development of
the solid waste industry's Best Management Practices (BMPs)
for preventing ergonomic injuries to solid waste employees;
and Maintaining and updating an interactive web
page concerning ergonomics and the solid waste industry,
applicable regulatory guidance, and the ability to ask
questions that receive prompt and informative responses. "It is important that all solid waste industry
employers and employees receive the highest benefit of OSHA's
current outreach initiatives and EREF's ergonomics education
programs," said Michael J. Cagney, EREF president.
"The OSHA grants that EREF has received over the past few
years have helped train both trainers and employees in the
waste industry to prevent occupational injuries in the
workplace, and EREF is committee to ensuring that valuable
information and training continues to reach those who need it
most." Under the supervision of EREF, the Environmental Industry
Associations (EIA), a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit trade
association, will manage the aspects of this ergonomics
training grant. EREF has contracted with EIA for its
ergonomics expertise since receiving its first Susan Harwood
grant in October 2000. The Environmental Research and Education Foundation is an
independent public charity; its funding base is derived from
donations from corporations and individuals who are committed
to EREF's mission to develop environmental solutions for the
future. For more complete information on EREF, go to its
website www.erefdn.org or
