Environmental Research and Education Foundation

Washington, D.C. - Robert J. Riethmiller, Jr. was elected in November 2001 to the board of directors of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) based in Washington, D.C.  His election to the EREF board is for a three-year term.

Mr. Riethmiller joined Philadelphia Tramrail Company (Philadelphia, Pa.) in 1960, and has served as president since 1968.  Since 1997, he has served on the board of the Material Handling Education Foundation (Charlotte, N.C.) and since 1998, as Manufacturing Chairman, WASTEC (Waste Equipment Technology Association) (Washington, D.C.).  Additional positions have included president of the Crane Manufacturers Associates of America (CMAA) (Charlotte, N.C.; 1995-1996), chairman of the Material Handling Institute of America (Charlotte, N.C.; 1996-1997), and chairman of the Council of Material Handling Distributors for P & H (Milwaukee, Wisc.; 1986-1998).

Mr. Riethmiller is a 1960 graduate of Villanova University, receiving a B.S. in Economics.

Philadelphia Tramrail Company was founded in 1907 by Charles B. Leonard, and was subsequently purchased by Mr. Riethmiller's grandfather in 1929.  Originally a manufacturer of monorails and meat track systems, Philadelphia Tramrail expanded to engineer and manufacture hydraulic down stroke balers and compactors in the early 1970s.  In 1999, its overhead crane division was sold to Morris Material Handling Company to allow the company to focus on its leadership in the baler and compactor industry.

The Environmental Research and Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that funds the development of environmental solutions through research and education, focusing on the waste and recycling industries.  Its endowment provides the financial base for a sustainable series of significant projects and scholarships (www.erefdn.org).
