Environmental Research and Education Foundation Awards
Francois Fiessinger Ph.D. Scholarships to
Students
Attending Cambridge University and Colorado School of Mines
Washington,
D.C. - During its fall meeting held on August 24 in Alexandria, Virginia, the Environmental Research and Education
Foundation's (EREF) Board of Directors awarded its 2001 Francois Fiessinger
Scholarships to Alexander Orlov, a Ph.D. student enrolled at Cambridge University,
United Kingdom (EREF's first international student) and Richard Statom, a Ph.D.
student attending the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado.
·
Alexander Orlov was born in Vinnitsa, Ukraine.
The inspiration for his dedication to environmental science stems from
the explosion at the Chernobyl atomic station in Kiev in April 1986, which
occurred only 60 miles from his hometown.
He holds Bachelor and Masters of Science in Electrical and Mechanical
Engineering from the National Technical University of Ukraine, a Masters of
Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan, and a
Masters of Philosophy in Physical Chemistry from Cambridge University. He will be completing his Ph.D. research at
Cambridge University, concentrating on new methods for groundwater clean up.
·
Richard Statom was born in Florence, Alabama.
He started working in the environmental field as an undergraduate student
in 1977 with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. After receiving a Masters of Science degree,
he spent over fifteen years working in environmental management with the Solid
Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, Florida.
Richard holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of
South Alabama and a Masters of Science in Geology from Mississippi State
University. He is conducting his Ph.D.
research on the evolution of leachate and hydrology of landfills at the
Colorado School of Mines.
"The Fiessinger Scholarship was established in
memory of a leading scientist in the waste industry, Dr. Francois
Fiessinger. Deserving and remarkable
Ph.D. students, Messrs. Orlov and Statom have been selected to continue the
tradition of high quality scientific research in the resource and waste
management industry," said Dr. Deborah C. Hockman (Silliker Laboratories,
Homewood, Ill.), interim chairman, EREF scholarship committee. "It is with great pride that the
foundation awards these scholarships in memory of one of its founding
members," she added.
In memory of Francois
Fiessinger, Ph.D., scholarships are awarded by the Environmental Research and
Education Foundation to support the work of outstanding students interested in
excellence in environmental research and science.
The mission of the
Environmental Research and Education Foundation is to develop environmental
solutions for the future through research and education. Its endowment provides the financial base
for a sustainable series of significant projects and scholarships.
