awarded first:
| $36,000 |
EREF Scholarship Grant to Susan De
Long in pursuit of her doctorate degree at the University of
Texas at Austin; Austin, Texas (2006). Ms. De Long's
research topic focuses on using gene sequencing for enhancing
landfill biodegredation.
|
| $24,000 |
EREF Scholarship Grant to Monica N. Danon-Schaffer
in pursuit of her doctorate at the University of British Columbia,
British Columbia, Canada. (2005). Ms. Danon-Schaffer's research
topic focuses on mass balance evaluation of polybrominated diphenyl
ethers - system models and upstream source characterization.
|
| $24,000 |
EREF Scholarship Grant to Shahzeen Zahid Attari in pursuit of her
doctorate degree at Carnegie Mellon University; Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania (2005). Ms. Attari's research topic focuses on
the excess of packaging in the United States - interdisciplinary
approach with implications of waste minimization, environmental
justice and social equity.
|
| $24,000 |
EREF Scholarship Grant to recent Ph.D. graduate Solenne Grellier, to
assist her post-doctoral work at the University of Illinois at
Chicago(2005). Ms. Grellier's research will address both the
dynamic water balance and geotechnical stability of bioreactor
landfills. She hopes to develop a field validated coupled flo-mechanical
model suitable to asses the performance of bioreactor landfills.
|
| $36,000 |
Fiessinger Environmental Science Scholarship Grant to Nicole Dawn
Berge
in pursuit of her doctorate at the University of Central Florida,
Orlando, Fla. (2004). Ms. Berge's research focuses on
determination of optimal environmental conditions and kinetics for
in-situ nitrification and denitrification, and the development of an
implementation strategy for in-situ nitrification and
denitrification at field-scale. Report to come

Fiessinger Environmental Science Scholarship Grant to Bryan Fleet
Staley in pursuit of his doctorate at North Carolina State
University, Raleigh, N.C. (2004). Mr. Staley's research
focuses on mechanisms controlling the production of non-methane
organic compounds and microbial community structure during refuse
decomposition. Report to come

| $36,000 |
Fiessinger Environmental Science Scholarship
Grant to Michael Sander in pursuit of his doctorate at Yale
University, New Haven, Conn. (2003). Mr. Sander's research
focuses on soils, specifically the mechanisms of sorption hysteresis
of hydrophobic organic compounds in natural and engineered sorbents
and the applicability of hysteresis to contaminant
sequestration. He will be developing a mechanistic explanation
of hysteresis in natural organic matter (NOM) and explore ways in
which hysteresis in NOM can be employed to advantage in site
remediation. See reports on his studies below. Paper

Fiessinger Environmental Science Scholarship
Grant to Mira Stone Olson in pursuit of her doctorate at the
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia (2002). Ms.
Olson is focusing on ground-water remediation, examining how
chemotaxis (the movement or orientation of an organism along a
chemical concentration gradient) affects the transport of bacteria
for bioremediation through low permeable materials. See
reports on his studies below.
