Webinar – Managing Coal Fly Ash and Flue Gas Wastewater: Environmental Challenges and Remediation

December 10, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm UTC+0

Presented by Ching-Hua Huang, Ph.D. (Professor), Susan E. Burns, Ph.D., P.E. (Georgia Power Distinguished Professor), F.ASCE, Jay E. Renew, P.E. (Ph.D. Candidate) at Georgia Institute of Technology

This webinar is designed to provide a basic understanding of the flue-gas-desulfurization (FGD) wastewater and coal fly ash generated at coal-fired power plants, their environmental disposal challenges and potential management strategies. This presentation will discuss the characteristics of FGD wastewater and coal fly ash, current management strategies for these two abundant energy production wastes, and an innovative approach to co-dispose FGD wastewater and coal fly ash through the solidification/stabilization technology that enhances heavy metal immobilization.

Upon completion of this webinar/course, the attendee will be able to:

  • Describe the processes, problems and opportunities of FGD wastewater and coal fly ash generated at coal-fired power plants.
  • Discuss the efficacy and mechanism of solidification/stabilization technology for immobilization of heavy metal contaminants.
  • Demonstrate the application of solidification/stabilization technology, different leaching tests and advanced liquid and solid characterization techniques in the design of an effective approach to address the problem of heavy metal contaminants in FGD wastewater and coal fly ash.
