Description

Released January 29, 2021.

Roughly 220 million tons of MSW are landfilled each year, across 1,500 MSW landfills (MSWLFs). One metric for the cost of disposal is the gate rate or tipping fee, i.e. the amount charged per ton for disposal at the landfill. EREF routinely surveys active MSWLFs across the U.S. to estimate the average MSWLF tipping fee nationally, regionally and on a state-by-state basis. The primary goal of the study is to track changes in MSWLF tip fee, and explore the relationship between tip fee and MSW management practices.

Results from this study will provide insight into the following types of questions:

  1. What is the average MSWLF tipping fee, and how does it vary across the U.S.?
  2. Are MSWLF tip fees increasing or decreasing each year?
  3. How does tip fee correlate to other MSW management practices (e.g. WTE, recycling)?
