Relationship Between Community Recycling Rates and WTE

Does the availability of waste-to-energy influence a community’s recycling rate? Industry trends show potentially-conflicting results. By using state-, community- and facility-specific data, this project seeks to identify if a correlation exists.

The goal of this project is to compare WTE and non-WTE states and communities in order to identify trends between WTE availability and recycling rate.

Preliminary results for this project suggest a minimal correlation at the community level. Currently, the project is expanding to include additional cities in hopes of better understanding what relationships may exist between the availability of waste-to-energy and recycling rates.
